Ranieri Pontello, who is regarded in great esteem by Fiorentina, has said that the club should learn from the sale of the former great Roberto Baggio. He has requested the club to do the same with the current star asset Stevan Jovetic. Roberto Baggio was sold to Juventus back in 1990 for a then world record transfer fee of £ 8 million. Even though Jovetic is unlikely to command a world record transfer fee, the player is still regarded as one of the most valuable assets for Fiorentina. The Pontello family were responsible for selling Baggio to Juventus – a move that was heavily criticised by the Fiorentina fans due to the incredible popularity of Baggio.
However, Pontello thinks that it will not happen with Jovetic because Baggio was a superior player during that period. He has said that the sale of Jovetic will certainly help Fiorentina improve the quality of the squad in other areas of the pitch. Jovetic is expected to come under transfer fee in the region of £ 24 million, with several clubs like Juventus and Manchester City showing interest in the player. Fiorentina and Juventus will be facing each other during the weekend, with the away team looking to continue their good run of form.
“There is a similarity between the two situations. We are talking about great players and two important clubs such as Fiorentina and Juventus. However, between Baggio and Jovetic, there is a difference. The Baggio of that time was superior to the present Jovetic. But I would be in favour of a sale if a notable offer is put on the table. After all, the Della Valle family are looking for balance between results and their accounts,” said Pontello. Fiorentina have been one of the surprise packages in the Italian Serie A this season.

The AC Milan midfielder Nigel de Jong will miss the rest of the season after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury, which comes as a major blow for the Italian club. Nigel de Jong is one of the experienced members of the AC Milan team after the club allowed a number of the experienced and high profile players to leave in the summer. He was signed from the Premier league champions Manchester city in the summer. AC Milan have struggled a lot in all competitions this season, but the presence of Nigel de Jong would have given them hope that they will be able to continue their recent good form till the end of the season.
However, the manager Massimiliano Allegri has been dealt a huge blow with the news that the midfielder will now miss the rest of the season with this injury. This also means that he is now short of options when it comes to the defensive midfielders. The player, though, has recently said that he has undergone his operation successfully and is looking forward to returning to the team as soon as possible. He has also thanked the support he has received from the fans and his teammates. He has so far made 15 appearances for the club since joining in the summer.
“Op was successful, now looking forward to full recovery. Thanks to my teammates, colleagues and fans for their support,” said the player on his Twitter account. “A bittersweet Sunday. De Jong’s tendon has snapped and that means the season is over for him. It’s a big loss for the team and takes the shine off the win,” said the vice president of the club, Adriano Galliani after the injury to the player. Milan are currently seventh in the Italian Serie A table, but they were struggling with relegation trouble early in the season.
The president of the technical sector of Federazione Italiana Giuoco Calcio, Roberto Baggio, has said that the Inter Milan team is very strong and it has a very good chance to win the ongoing Serie A League. Inter Milan is currently at the no. 2 position in the Serie A points table. Inter has played 12 matches in the ongoing league so far out of which it has won 9 matches and has been defeated in 3 matches. Inter currently has 27 points in 12 matches. Juventus is at the top of the table at the moment with 31 points in 12 matches.
When asked which team he believes is the strongest contender to win the Serie A League, Baggio said, “There are quite a few strong teams in the tournament. But, I think Inter is the strongest of them all. I Nerazzurri were struggling a bit at the start of the season, but, in the last few matches, they have been fantastic.”
“I am enjoying a lot watching the Serie A this time around. There are some great matches played in this season. The level of competition is very high. The top three teams are pretty close to each other as far as the quality is concerned.”
“Juventus is certainly looking better than the previous season. They have found the right kind of balance and they have looked a confident side. Napoli has also done quite well so far. The upcoming matches are going to very interesting; that’s for sure.”
“I am disappointed with the way AC Milan has performed in this season. They are certainly better than what they are looking at the moment. I had massive expectations of them before the start of the season, but, they have looked pretty average so far.”
